Defining the Standard of Care
The Guiding Principles for Programmatic AI Governance is a publication of the DCRO Institute, produced by its Programmatic AI Governance Council and co-produced with the Center for AI Oversight.
The Center for AI Oversight served as the exclusive drafter for the Council, preparing each drafting batch, carrying the Council's review rounds into the text, and developing the suite of companion tools.
The paper outlines a five-pillar structure for AI oversight, moving beyond abstract risk warnings to establish an actionable methodology for boards and committees. The principles establish the required baseline for accountability, from defining clear risk tolerances to ensuring ongoing operational resilience.
The Companion Tools
Alongside the primary paper, the publication includes six actionable companion tools maintained as living resources. These tools bridge the gap between board-level principles and management-level execution.
- Tool A · Principles Summary: Restates the core principles for rapid reference.
- Tool B · Oversight vs Assurance: Distinguishes the board's oversight duties from management's execution responsibilities.
- Tool C · Application Across Scale: Addresses how the principles scale across different sizes and structures of organizations.
- Tool D · Program Map: Presents one potential map of a mature AI governance program based on the Center's proprietary oversight model.
- Tool E · Charter Template: A template for an AI governance program charter.
- Tool F · Self-Assessment: A rubric to evaluate the maturity of an organization's existing governance program against the principles.
